Asphalt tons calculator: the formula
Asphalt plants sell hot mix by the ton, and the conversion is a long-standing paving rule of thumb: compacted hot-mix asphalt weighs about 110 lb per square yard per inch of thickness.

A tandem dump truck carries about 18 tons, so most residential driveways are one or two truckloads.
Asphalt driveway calculator: thickness and base
How thick to pave depends on what's underneath. The Illinois Asphalt Pavement Association gives homeowners two options:
- Full-depth asphalt — 4 to 6 in of asphalt directly on a well-compacted subgrade. It keeps water out of the pavement entirely.
- Asphalt over stone — about 3 in of asphalt on 6 to 8 in of compacted aggregate base. This is the common approach, and the calculator adds the base tonnage when you pick a base depth.
For an existing driveway that's cracked but structurally sound, a 1-1/2 to 2 in overlay is the usual fix. Thicker pavements are placed in lifts — two layers of about 1-1/2 in each rather than one thick pass — so each layer compacts properly.
What to watch on a paving quote
- Thickness is compacted thickness. The mix goes down about a third thicker and the roller brings it down; make sure the quote states the finished depth.
- Base. Ask how deep the stone base is and whether it's compacted in lifts. Most driveway failures are base failures.
- Tons on the ticket. Asphalt is billed by the ton from the plant, so you can check the delivery tickets against the tonnage from this calculator.
- Door-to-door "leftover asphalt" offers. The Illinois association warns against them: mix left over from another job has cooled too much to compact properly.
