How much driveway sealer do I need?
Driveway sealer comes in 4.75 to 5 gallon pails, and each pail's label gives its coverage per coat. The calculator multiplies your driveway area by the number of coats and divides by that coverage:
| Driveway | Area | Smooth asphalt (≈350 sq ft/pail) | Rough, porous (≈250 sq ft/pail) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 × 20 ft | 400 sq ft | 3 pails | 4 pails |
| 40 × 10 ft | 400 sq ft | 3 pails | 4 pails |
| 50 × 12 ft | 600 sq ft | 4 pails | 5 pails |
| 60 × 12 ft | 720 sq ft | 5 pails | 6 pails |
| 100 × 12 ft | 1,200 sq ft | 7 pails | 10 pails |
Two coats. If your pail lists a specific coverage, type it into Your sealer's label coverage and the calculator uses that instead.

Sealcoating calculator: smooth vs rough asphalt
| Product (4.75 gal) | Label coverage per coat |
|---|---|
| JetCoat driveway sealers | 250–350 sq ft |
| Latex-ite sand-mix sealer | 400–500 smooth/sealed, 300–400 rough |
The spread comes from the surface, not just the product. Old, open-textured asphalt soaks up the first coat, which is why it needs the low number and almost always a second coat. A driveway sealed every couple of years stays tight and gets close to the high number.

Asphalt sealer calculator: before you open the pail
- Clean and fill first. Blow or sweep the surface, scrub oil spots, and fill cracks wider than about 1/8 in with crack filler. Sealer bridges hairlines, not cracks.
- Weather. Product labels commonly ask for temperatures staying above about 60°F and no rain for 48 hours. Early morning dew counts.
- Thin coats. Pour a ribbon and spread it with a squeegee, keeping a wet edge; a second thin coat lasts longer than one heavy one.
- New asphalt waits. Give a freshly paved driveway several months to cure before the first coat.
Asphalt sealer is for asphalt only. A concrete driveway needs a penetrating concrete sealer instead. If the driveway is breaking up rather than just fading, the asphalt calculator sizes an overlay or a new pavement.
